Cyberpunk 2077

The comeback is complete: a dense city, a great story, and a single purchase.

A superb story and a city worth getting lost in, at an honest price. Buy the expansion with it; it is the best part.

Cyberpunk 2077 is CD Projekt Red's single-player open-world role-playing game set in Night City, a vertical, neon metropolis where you play V, a mercenary with a dead rock star in your head. Its launch in 2020 was famously broken; years of patches and the Phantom Liberty expansion turned it into one of the most admired story games of the decade. It is bought once, sells nothing inside, and is best played alone with the lights off.

The four bearings

A clear opening, three life paths and a tutorial woven into the story. The city can overwhelm at first, and the PC version wants a capable machine.

Night City is the most convincing place on the chart. Missions are varied, the shooting and hacking are satisfying, and the writing carries the ordinary side jobs.

Sixty to a hundred hours including the expansion, then a second run for a different path and ending. There is no live component and CD Projekt has moved on to the sequel.

What you are actually doing

You are V, a mercenary in Night City, and after a heist goes wrong you share your head with Johnny Silverhand, a dead anarchist played by Keanu Reeves. The main story is about the two of you and a countdown; the city is about everything else. Missions mix shooting, stealth, hacking and driving, and a skill system lets you specialise into a quiet netrunner, a loud brawler or a sharpshooter. Choices in conversations matter more than in most games, and the endings are genuinely different.

Night City itself is the achievement: dense, vertical, layered with detail, and full of side stories that are often better than the main one. The 2.0 update rebuilt the skills, the police and the driving; Phantom Liberty added a new district and a spy thriller with its own ending.

The first evening, honestly

The prologue is generous. You pick a life path, play a short origin, and are eased into the city with a partner who explains things. The systems are many, but they arrive one at a time. On PC the game wants a modern graphics card to look its best; on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and Switch 2 it is a solid, finished product. The Switch 2 version is a real technical feat and a fine way to play in bed.

Why it stays

This is a finished game with a beginning, middle and end, and that is a virtue on a chart full of games that never stop. Most players do one full run with the expansion, then perhaps a second with a different build and path. The last numbered patch, 2.31, arrived in September 2025; 2026 brought a PlayStation 5 Pro update in April and the forty-million-copies milestone in July. CD Projekt has announced a sequel, so what is here now is what there will be, and it is plenty.

Where it shines, where it drags

  • The best-realised city in games
  • Strong writing in both the main story and the side jobs
  • A single purchase, deep discounts, no shop
  • Phantom Liberty is an outstanding expansion
  • Demanding on PC hardware for the best visuals
  • Single player only; nothing to do with friends
  • Some early-game systems arrive all at once
  • Major updates have ended; the last numbered patch was September 2025

The toll: what it costs in the UK

Cyberpunk 2077 is a single purchase. Phantom Liberty, the one expansion, is sold separately or in an Ultimate Edition bundle; on Switch 2 and Mac only the Ultimate Edition is sold. There is no shop, no currency and no pass. It is discounted heavily and often; paying full price is rarely necessary. Note that Phantom Liberty is not available on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

  • Base game (Steam UK)£49.99, often half that on sale
  • Phantom Liberty expansion£24.99
  • Ultimate Edition bundle (game and expansion)£68.98 on Steam
  • Switch 2 and Mac Ultimate EditionPrice shown in each store

Randomised items: No. Nothing randomised is sold and there is no in-game currency to buy.

Subscriptions and online play: None needed. The game is entirely single player and works offline.

Prices checked 24 September 2026 on the UK stores named above. See Paying for games in the UK for the rights that apply to each payment route.

Who it suits

Players who want a story with real choices and a city to get lost in, on their own. If you want the same freedom with a harder edge and less hand-holding, Elden Ring is the other side of Open Country.
