The Arena

Valorant

Thirteen rounds of nerve. Free to play, expensive to look good in.

The sharpest competitive shooter you can install for nothing. Play it for the clutch rounds, mute the lobby, and treat the skin shop as a museum.

Free, no power soldTactical shooterRanked ladderPC and consoleRiot account

Valorant is Riot's free tactical shooter: two teams of five, short rounds, plant the spike or defuse it, first to thirteen. Precise shooting matters more than anything else, and a set of agent abilities gives each round a second layer of decisions. Nothing in the shop changes how a bullet flies. The skins, however, are the most expensive cosmetics on this chart.

The four bearings

A small download and a decent range mode, but unranked matches put you against people immediately and a tactical shooter has no gentle setting. Vanguard is required on PC.

Rounds are two minutes of pure tension, and the best of them are unforgettable. Full matches run long, but shorter modes fit a lunch hour.

Seasonal acts, new agents and maps on a reliable cadence, a ranked system that is mostly fair, and a professional circuit worth watching.

Free forever and nothing sold affects play, but the skin bundles are priced like small games and the shop rotates daily to make you look.

Weighted 20 / 35 / 25 / 20 into an Atlas score of 7.8. How the bearings work.

What you are actually doing

Two teams of five alternate attacking and defending across rounds. Attackers try to plant a spike at one of two or three sites and keep it there for forty-five seconds; defenders try to stop them or defuse it. Everyone has one life per round and buys weapons and abilities with money earned from the previous rounds. First to thirteen rounds takes the match, which usually means thirty-five to forty-five minutes.

Each player is an agent with four abilities: smokes, flashes, walls, healing, scouting. They do not replace aim, but they decide where aim gets to happen. A good smoke decides the round for the player who shoots through it.

The first evening, honestly

Valorant is welcoming in the sense that you can be playing people within twenty minutes, and unforgiving in the sense that those people will be better than you. New accounts start with five agents, Brimstone, Jett, Phoenix, Sage and Sova, from a roster of thirty. The practice range is good and the Swiftplay and Spike Rush modes are short enough to fail in comfortably; ranked opens at account level twenty. The console version launched in 2024 and shares your cosmetics and agents with PC, though ranks are kept separately and the two never play against each other. On PC you accept the Vanguard anti-cheat driver, and on Windows 11 that means TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot; it is the price of a shooter where cheats are rare.

Why it stays

Every act brings a rank reset, a new pass, often a new agent or map, and a reason to climb again. Patch 13.06 on 22 September 2026 added a new rifle, the Warden, a limited-time two-versus-two mode and a Performance Score that replaces the old combat score. The professional scene, the Valorant Champions Tour, is easy to follow and full of moments you can copy; Masters London 2026 was played in the UK. The game's real longevity is in the friendships: a five-stack that plays every Thursday is the best way to experience it.

Where it shines, where it drags

  • Superb shooting feel and readable maps
  • Rounds are short stories; matches build to real drama
  • Cheating is rare thanks to a strict anti-cheat
  • Cross-platform on console, with PC kept separate for fairness
  • Skins are the priciest cosmetics on the chart
  • Vanguard anti-cheat is kernel-level and mandatory on PC
  • No gentle mode: even unranked matches are against people
  • Voice chat needs a mute finger

Who it suits

Players who like shooters and want them to be about precision rather than movement or gear, and anyone with four friends and a Thursday. If you would rather out-think an opponent over half an hour, League of Legends shares the same account.

Where to go next
